The Meridian is a demonstration publication: an editorial site in the register of a serious daily, wrapped around one thing built at full craft — the daily word game, FIVES.

It exists as a design reference — a worked example of what a subscription-media company looks like end to end: a front page and article pages set with real typographic care, a metered paywall, subscription tiers, newsletters, a help center, and a flagship game with streaks and a spoiler-free share grid wired through to the end.

What we are

An editorial system with clearly-fictional, evergreen features — essays and explainers with no shelf life — organized into sections with bylines, and a games desk anchored by FIVES. The paper is set in a four-typeface system, each face with exactly one job, in the tradition of the great newspapers.

What we are not

We are not a newsroom, and we do not pretend to be. There are no reporters, no bureaus, no original newsgathering, and nothing here is real news. Every article is invented. The typography borrows the costume of a paper of record; it does not, and cannot, borrow the authority. We say so plainly because honesty about the boundary is part of the craft.

Our puzzles are not handcrafted by editors, either — FIVES draws its daily words from a public word list. The craft is in the game, not in a claim of human authorship we haven't earned.

The idea

A free daily game is the front door; the journalism is the house. You can visit every morning, play FIVES, build a streak, and never pay a cent. The subscription buys the surround — unlimited reading, the archive, the newsletters — for readers who want it. That's the whole model, stated without mystery.
